Honoring Stipo Pranyko for his 80th birthday, the exhibition shows works by the artist from the years 1995 to 2010. At the Convento Santo Domingo in Teguise, the former capital city of the island, his paintings and voluminous objects form an impressive installation. In their spiritual aura they seem to be created for this sacral space of the past. In their simplicity – the “poor” materials, such as nails, wire, gauze, rize and the objets trouvés integrated in the “image”: a spoon, a sieve, antique tools – lies their beauty and their energy. They have great stillness, they are both abstract and narrative. Often rooted in memories, these works evoke existential questions of life and death, of love and loss, of pain and happiness.
Stipo Pranyko has created an ideosyncratic oeuvre outside contemporary fashions. His life and work have formed the basis of his house in Tahiche as a “Gesamtkunstwerk”.
A book documenting the exhibition will be published end of 2010.
